Mary Shimmel
MS, Registered Mental Health Counseling Intern
Staff Therapist
Mary was first interested in becoming a mental health counselor when she started attending counseling as a young teenager. She found herself fascinated by the deep questioning and the one on one time that revolved around mental health. Through digging deeper into her story and mental well-being, she became sold on how powerful the process of counseling is. Fast forward to today, she has a front row seat in helping others with this process, and it gives her so much joy.
Mary’s primary goal is for clients to feel known, safe, and accepted. Each client is invited to share their story at their own timing and with their personal level of comfort. Mary values feedback and sees counseling as a collaborative process with her clients.
Mary’s specialties include: self-esteem, boundaries, anxiety, depression, ADHD, familial conflict, trauma, complex trauma, and emotional trauma/abuse. She enjoys working with all ages…however, her specialty is working with adolescents and young adults. She is trained in play therapy, expressive arts therapy, and trauma therapy. Mary is also trained in Gottman Level 1 couple’s therapy. Mary looks forward to engaging her clients in this process, getting their feedback, and adjusting along the way.
Mary is a Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern. She was born in Orlando, Florida and has been here since. She attended the University of Central Florida for her undergraduate degree, taught elementary school for six years, and then eventually decided to continue her education at Palm Beach Atlantic University to pursue her Masters of Science in counseling. She graduated with her master’s in clinical Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in trauma, which gives her a strong background of trauma-informed care to crisis and trauma survivors. Mary is also trained in EMDR and DBT and loves using these modalities to help support her clients.
